MasterClass: Applications for Motivational Interviewing (2012) - Part II

Thank you for joining us for our two-part MasterClass series on motivational interviewing featuring his the work of Michael Pantalon. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a counseling model that was developed for addiction and substance abuse in order to help people resolve their ambivalence to change in difficult circumstances. MI techniques are a wonderful addition to the coach’s toolbox, creating a dynamic that is authentically empathic and one that elicits improved autonomous motivation and confidence. MI techniques include the creative use of open-ended questions balanced by a variety of types of reflections, and “rulers,” a scale of 1 to 10 to better understand the importance, confidence, and readiness to make specific changes.

Michael Pantalon is a prominent psychologist and MI trainer who has developed an ultra-brief approach to motivational interviewing that he calls “Instant Influence” which he presented in a track for the 2011 Coaching in Leadership & Healthcare conference offered by the Institute of Coaching and Harvard Medical School. This MasterClass will explore the practice of Motivational Interviewing skills and techniques in coaching.
