Jason Salemi

Dr. Salemi is a native Tampeño and triple USF alumni having earned his BSc in Biology/Pre-Med Sciences (2000), and MPH (2005) and PhD (2014) both with a concentration in Epidemiology, from the University of South Florida (USF). In addition to his degrees, he also earned Graduate Certificates in Biostatistics (2004) and in Applied Biostatistics (2008). After graduating in 2014, Dr. Salemi accepted a tenure-earning Assistant Professor position at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in Houston, TX. While at BCM, Dr. Salemi was appointed Director of Analytics for the Center for Primary Care and Population Health Research (2015), Assistant Director of a HRSA-funded Postdoctoral Primary Care Research Fellowship (2015), and Clinical Research Trainer for BCM’s Center of Excellence in Health Equity, Training and Research (2017). In 2019, he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure.

Dr. Salemi is nationally recognized as an expert in birth defects surveillance methodology, evaluation, and research. He currently serves as Chair of the Surveillance Guidelines and Standards Committee for the National Birth Defects Prevention Network (NBDPN) after serving as elected President of NBDPN in 2018. Dr. Salemi has substantial experience in the education, mentoring, and advising of graduate/medical students, clinical and research post-docs, and junior faculty, and in 2019, was appointed as his department’s Director of Faculty Development at BCM. In 2020, Dr. Salemi rejoined USF to continue this positive trajectory and continue productive relationships with colleagues in the College of Public Health and in the Morsani College of Medicine.

As of July 2020, Dr. Salemi currently has over 150 peer-reviewed papers and many published abstracts and conference talks. In May 2020, Dr. Salemi began building his own statewide, interactive dashboard to track COVID-19 in the state of Florida. His dashboard received national attention from the COVID Tracking Project, and has been an invaluable resource for researchers, data scientists, advocacy groups, county commissioners, and other citizens throughout the state. He has been covered on local, national, and international media discusses the importance of complete, accurate, and timely data on COVID-19 and how COVID-19 is impacting the pediatric population.
