Breathwork

I invite you to join us on Friday, October 14th for Together at Home, a free monthly, one hour, live virtual meeting with the intention to explore our experience and to connect with each other and ourselves. This month, we will explore: Breathwork.

For the month of October, Together at Home will be taking a break from our normal routine of meditation and self inquiry around a topic and we’ll be exploring a new form of self experience, Pranayama Yoga or Breathwork.

What will we be doing?

We’ll be doing a form of self-exploration called pranayama yoga, or breathwork. Breathwork is an active meditation using two-part breathing (through the mouth) that will shift your body into its parasympathetic nervous system. This can create deep relaxation and move energy through the body, allowing you to reflect deeply, release stuck emotions, and gain added clarity.

How do I prepare?

You can do the following to prepare for the TAH breathwork session:

  • Come with an idea of what you’d like to work through
  • Refrain from eating for at least an hour before the session
  • Arrive on time. (Entry will not be allowed after the first 5 minutes)
  • Have within reach:
    • An eye pillow
    • A pillow
    • A yoga mat (or you can just line on the floor or a bed)
    • Water
    • Your journal and pen
What Can You Experience during Breathwork?

Breathwork activates the hypothalamus and the body’s parasympathetic nervous system. Like other types of meditation, it can take the self-referencing default mode network of the brain offline and allow you to access and integrate other regions of the brain.

Most people experience tingling and energy in the hands, arms, feet, legs, and throughout the body. Some people may feel lightheaded or dizzy (which is why it’s performed lying down). Some people get “tetany” or cramping of the hands. If either happens, you are encouraged to breathe through your nose until you are less dizzy and/or your hands are more relaxed. Breathwork is safe for almost everyone and if you have any concerns about the safety of performing breathwork, consult your physician before engaging in it.

These monthly Zoom events are an opportunity for coaches to create connections with each other and are hosted by the Institute of Coaching DC Area Roundtable.

Each live virtual meeting will include:
  • Grounding meditation
  • Brief introduction of the theme for the month
  • Small group discussion, exploration, and connection
  • Closing meditation
