The Spirit of Unity in Coaching

Please join Eileen Coskey Fracchia, IOC Thought Leader, Strategic Advisor, and Roundtable Leader, and the host committee: Amii Barnard-Bahn, David Bishop and Nooshin Nathan, for our 16th IOC West Coast Roundtable, Thursday, March 11, 2021, 8:00 am – 10:00 am PST – via zoom, where our topic will be centered around Unity.

“Unity,” whether in a United States inauguration speech, a Super Bowl commercial and even on the big screen, there is a fundamental theme of Unity.  So, where and how does this theme show up in the coaching relationship?  What qualities/skills/tools/resources are needed in service of Unity?

  • Unity:  is being together or at one with someone or something. It's the opposite of being divided. This is a word for togetherness or oneness.  (Vocabulary.com)
  • Unity sometimes means excluding those who won’t agree to respect basic ground rules.” – President Biden
  • “You will Unite or you will fall.” — Elrond, The Lord of the Rings, the Fellowship of the Ring
  • “When faced with a complex, fast-moving crisis, leaders must constantly adapt their mental models and create a “unity of effort,” Admiral Thad Allen, USCG (Ret.) – Scott Berinato https://hbr.org/2010/11/you-have-to-lead-from-everywhere
  • In a two-minute Super Bowl spot from Jeep featuring Bruce Springsteen, in his first-ever commercial, issuing a plea for unity in America at a time of remarkable pain and strife.

A provocative topic to be sure, we expect our discussions to be lively and activities – valuable.  In the same format as our last virtual Roundtable, we will move in and out of full group conversations to breakout rooms – to allow for some deeper sharing and networking.  The Host committee members will lead those smaller group discussions – each having some data and activity to support the topic and creating space to share additional learnings and approaches/frameworks colleagues are utilizing – relative to ‘Unity’. At the conclusion of those groups, we will come back together to share the best practices output and wrap up.

Eileen and the host committee are committed to the IOC mission — to disseminate the best coaching science and empower you to catalyze positive change in yourself, your community, and the world around you.

The Spirit of Unity in Coaching… we hope you find this as interesting as we do and chose to participate.  We are holding attendance to 50 people, so please be sure to register early.

Additional information and pre-meeting materials will be forwarded to registrants by March 5.

Roundtable meetings promise:

  • A marketing-free, inclusive, and peer-based learning space for coaches to learn about and share new coaching concepts and research.
  • A community of coaching professionals to provide peer coaching and support for developing the “growing edge” of our respective capabilities.
  • Ways to apply the resources available through the IOC to real coaching situations through case consultation and group seminars.
  • The format is a series of three to four 2-hour events over the course of the year. Each session includes a topic facilitated by an IOC member, discussion of practice and application with that topic, along with case consultation and peer coaching depending on the topic and needs of the group.
