Burnout

The Masterclass on Burnout brings together a group of articles, videos, IOC webinars and reports from IOC funded grants to support our members in learning about the state of the science of burnout and engagement, as well as their relevance to the practice of coaching. Through this Masterclass, one can connect the different resources to achieve a comprehensive and current understanding of the research being conducted on burnout and engagement at the individual and organizational levels. The articles are chosen to represent methodologically strong studies and reviews – some of these are key references published several years ago, while others are very current just coming out of press.

Burnout is seen as resulting from prolonged job stress, and includes the dimensions of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization or cynicism, and reduced personal accomplishment (Maslach et al. 2001). Engagement on the other hand, has been considered as the opposite of burnout – having to do with wellbeing and positive attitudes toward work defined as with the dimensions of vigor, dedication, and absorption (Schaufeli et al, 2002). The approaches to preventing and overcoming burnout and increasing engagement are focused on individual well-being as well as more and more – on the role of the work environment, organizational culture, leadership style and social relations within organizations. While burnout coaching is evolving as its separate coaching specialty, understanding the definitions, health impacts and existing practices related to burnout and engagement, will be of benefit to practitioners in many areas of coaching.
