From Burnout to Resilience: Coaching Physicians and Physician Leaders with Positive Psychology

Gail Gazelle, MD, FACP, FAAHPM, is a practicing physician, a part-time Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and an executive coach for physicians and physician leaders. A specialist in physician and physician executive burnout and resilience, Dr. Gazelle is the author of the ebook: “Building Your Resilient Self®: 52 Tips to Move From Physician Burnout to Balance” available as a FREE download at www.GailGazelle.com as well as the 2013 Harvard Medical School Guide “Mindfulness Support for Alzheimer’s Caregivers.”

With articles in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, and the Journal of General Internal Medicine, Dr. Gazelle published one of the first articles on coaching for physician burnout to appear in a medical journal. As a physician for more than 25 years, Dr. Gazelle has full understanding of why physicians are prone to burnout, how the rapidly changing landscape of healthcare is adversely affecting physician well-being, and what tools can be applied to address this issue.

When is coaching the right solution? 4.What principles of Positive Psychology apply in burnout scenarios? 5.How does positive psychology work in a coaching engagement? 6.What is the proper role for an effective coach in helping leaders build resilience?
