For 25+ years Patricia Hinton Walker has held national prominence as leader in the health care and health sciences education as a school of university vice president, nursing dean, associate dean, CNO in hospital and community-based care and as a leader in the Health IT/Technology and Policy arenas. She served as Senior Advisor to the TIGER (Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform) Initiative Foundation and is much-sought after speaker on topics such as: health informatics; use of technology in education, practice, research and health/wellness coaching; leadership and cultural change in health care and education. Currently she serves as Owner/Director of Coaching Stepping Stones and is certified in Health and Wellness Coaching, Social-Emotional Intelligence Coaching, Executive Coaching and Body-Centered Coaching. She also serves as Professor Emeritus at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD where she previously served as Dean, Graduate School of Nursing. In 2001, she was Senior Scholar in Residence at the Agency for Healthcare, Research and Policy (AHRQ) focusing on cost and quality outcomes, as well as patient safety research. Recently, she served as an internal coach and consultant on Patient Safety, the CMS sponsored Partnership for Patients initiative, and TeamSTEPPS to the DoD Patient Safety Program within Tricare Management Activity (a component of the Military Health Care System).
Dr. Hinton Walker has published widely in inter-professional and nursing publications on coaching, health IT and informatics; innovation and use of technology in education, practice and research; interdisciplinary partnerships; and outcomes-focused education (competency-based); practice and research (cost/quality outcomes). She previously served on the board of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) and has served as a board member on both nursing and inter-professional organizations such as: the National Academies of Practice (NAP); the Informatics Expert Panel for the American Academy of Nursing; the policy committee within the nursing workgroup at AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association); the Friends of the National Institutes of Nursing Research; and the National League for Nursing Foundation. She has provided consultation on innovations and future directions in education, cost/quality outcomes, and informatics in: in schools/universities and health care settings across the USA, and in Brazil, Taiwan, Canada, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, United Kingdom, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Poland and Saudi Arabia.
In addition to her professional nursing career, Dr. Hinton Walker became President and Founder of Hinton Walker Associates in the 1980’s and she has added a thriving career, executive and health/wellness coaching practice in her business, and, as mentioned previously, not Coaching Stepping Stones. She is on the trainer team at MentorCoach, an International Coaching Federation (ICF) approved program for professionals seeking coaching certification, and coordinates the Health/Wellness coaching certification option at MentorCoach. She also serves on the Advisory Council of the National Consortium for the Credentialing of Health and Wellness Coaches (NCCHWC) and is involved in development of a national credentialing examination and the code of ethics and scope of practice for health and wellness coaches. This venture is in addition to the already established and ongoing organizational development, educational consultation business.
