Vertical Development: A Journey? A Race? But to Where?

The work of Bob Kegan, Bill Torbert, Susanne Cook-Greuter, Jennifer Garvey-Berger and others all build off a core concept that increased capacity comes with expanded ability to consider, understand, empathize, and respond to a greater diversity, depth, and complexity of perspectives. Yet, with so many developmental frameworks to choose from and increasing demand to develop leaders who can navigate complexity and uncertainty, comes the danger of oversimplification and reduction of complex concepts. At root, vertical development is about transformation, which is neither easy, sexy, nor fun. For coaches, this work can be powerful and also challenging without a map, a solid understanding of the terrain, and an honest appreciation for their own development.
