DENNIS O’BRIEN, PSY.D. Dr. Dennis O’Brien is the Regional Coaching Leader for Right Management’s Talent Management practice in the Northeast Region of the US. Coaching and Experience Dennis brings over 30 years of experience as a trusted advisor to senior executives, coaching them through career and role transitions, as well as strategic re-alignments. As an organizational psychologist with deep business acumen, he has worked with many C-suite executives in accelerating their ramp up to new leadership roles, helping to build high performing senior leadership teams, and aligning senior leadership teams with organizational strategy. A representative sample of his coaching engagements includes: • Onboard coaching with a senior leader heading up the R&D function in a large Fortune 100 organization. His casual and informal style was being perceived as a potential obstacle to success in his new role. Worked with his key stakeholders to adapt his presentation style to meet with success in more formal situations in which impact was critical. With ongoing feedback, he was able to tailor his style when delivering presentations to senior leaders and he became a go-to presenter at high profile investors’ events. • Integrating a senior R&D leader who was hired to head up a major franchise within a large Pharmaceutical firm. This leader was moving from a mid-sized to a very large organization, with a large increase in the scope of his role. He had to make a very fast adjustment to a much more sophisticated, relationship based organization with little margin for error as he ramped up his performance in the new role. Initially, he had to make sure that he had the right leadership team in place and then he had to ensure that their efforts were aligned. • Coaching the leader of the biostatistics function within a biotech during its integration into a much larger, global pharmaceutical organization. This leader’s role tripled in scope and he had to adjust his leadership style in order to successfully adapt to leading a remotely based leadership team. This involved individual coaching with the leader as well as team effectiveness work with his leadership team. • Partnering with the CEO of a major health insurance organization to select and integrate a new CFO, CIO, and SVP of Sales in order to drive a higher level of performance across the organization. This included the design and implementation of comprehensive coaching programs with the newly hired members of the senior leadership team to accelerate their own integration into the organization, as well as to assemble and develop their own functional leadership teams. Coaching Value Proposition Dennis is a firm believer that coaching is the most effective and impactful way to engage senior executives in a compelling, just in time developmental experience. A coaching engagement is most successful when it involves the most relevant key stakeholders in the process and is based upon business relevant and clearly delineated goals. Establishing clear accountability and role clarity for everyone involved in the process is the best way to ensure that the intended outcomes will be met.
